“You can chase a dream that seems so out of reach, and you know it might not ever come your way, dream it anyway. God is great, but sometimes life ain’t good, and when I pray, it doesn’t always turn out like I think it should. But I do it anyway.” -Anyway (Martina McBride)
I’m sure you’ve heard this time and time again (or at least some version of it): “You have gifts which are uniquely yours that the world needs.” It’s a common expression used by life coaches and spiritual teachers. Well, guess what? It’s true! And the world needs you to start sharing these gifts now! Maybe you’re an artist, musician, writer, teacher, a parent, a life coach, or the world’s best customer service person. Whatever your skills are, they are meant to help the world in some way. Nothing is too small – or too big.
I think a lot about why we are here on Earth – about what our purpose is for being alive. I believe there is a bigger plan in place that we don’t necessarily see. After all, if there is no bigger plan, what are we doing here?! Why would we even be here? There has to be some point in us having a life. I personally don’t think that it’s just to be born, go to school, work, get married, have kids, retire, and die. We could get into a discussion about raising the consciousness of the cosmos, but for now I just want to talk about our purpose at the level of the individual person as it relates to your work in the world.
“There is no greater gift you can give or receive than to honor your calling. It’s why you were born. And how you become most truly alive.” ~Oprah Winfrey~
Do you know what your calling is? Are you living it? If so, great! If not, why? What’s stopping you? Are you unsure what your talents are? Do you think you have nothing to offer? Is it too hard or scary to put yourself out there? We’ve all been there! And what I know for sure is that we are meant to live life from a place of passion versus a place of fear. One of my best friends sent me this quote by Howard Thurman a few years ago, and I absolutely love it (and think it’s totally relevant at this point in the conversation): “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive and then go out and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”
Ask. Be open. Listen. You will receive the answer.
What does ‘coming alive’ look like in your daily life? You ‘work’ in a career that lights you up from the inside out. You do what you are uniquely designed to do that will be of service to others. You set your mind to being the change that the world needs, and you don’t let fear or obstacles slow you down. You become incredibly dedicated to your purpose – no matter what others have to say. You don’t have time to listen to their doubts, and you have no interest in merely existing so that you can be part of the norm. Other people’s opinions are drowned out by your inner voice which will not be silenced any longer. You don’t always do what seems logical because you know that The Universe has your back and that your full potential exists within you. You have everything you need to succeed, and you are ready. So what if you can’t be sure of the outcome! Do it anyway.
“If you asked me what I came into this world to do, I will tell you: I came to live out loud.” ~Emile Zola~
